Hamilton’s vital victory in Japan

Lewis Hamilton stormed to victory in the Japanese Grand Prix. Meanwhile Timo Glock followed in his footsteps by winning the GP2 title – the feeder category to F1 – in Valencia.

And Britain’s A1 Grand Prix team got the new season off to a winning start.

Formula One Japanese Grand Prix, Fuji Speedway

Lewis Hamilton won in pouring rain despite an early collision with Robert Kubica.

Team mate Fernando Alonso crashed out and fell 12 points behind Hamilton in the championship race.

And the Ferrari team’s hopes were hit after they started on the wrong tyres, leaving Kimi Raikkonen third and 17 points behind Hamilton with two races left.

Race report

GP2, Valencia

Timo Glock won the championship that set Hamilton on his way to F1 last year. An emphatic win in Sunday’s sprint race sealed the title as rival Lucas di Grassi struggled.

Glock, the BMW F1 team’s test driver, has been tipped to join Toyota’s F1 outfit next year.

A1 Grand Prix, Zandvoort

Oliver Jarvis underlined the British team’s status as championship contenders with a win in the second race of the year.

South Africa’s Adrian Zaugg took the first win in the season-opening double-header, and his team leads the championship after he finished second in the feature race.

F3 Euroseries, Nogaro

A win apiece for championship contenders Romain Grosjean and Sebastien Buemi set up a thrilling championship showdown at Hockenheim at the end of October.

British F3, Rockingham

Marko Asmer had already won the championship before the final round, and he signed off in style with a crushing win in the first race at Rockingham.

But the final race of the year didn’t go to plan, as Asmer collided with Jonathan Kennard on the first lap, retiring on the spot. Maro Engel won the race, repeating his victory in the first race of the season.
