The wait is over, the Subaru Impreza STI has been officially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show and all its technical details are now in the public domain.
Closely resembling the WRC concept, the STI certainly looks much meaner than the standard Impreza hatch with a much broader stance, aggressive wheels and quad exhaust pipes.
Under the bonnet, variable valve timing has been added to the 2.5-litre engine boosting pulling power and increasing its output to 296bhp – a 20bhp increase over the previous STI.
The radical change in design from saloon to hatchback has provoked some strong opinions from hardcore Impreza fans.

A true motoring icon RUINED!!!!!!!! The Impreza is a fantastic car but suffers from a bad image, turning it into a hot hatch has just confirmed the “boy racer” image. Subaru should be ashamed of themselves. I currently own an Impreza WRX( my third one) and i was planning to buy a new one next year. This new hatch has changed my mind, im going for an EVO. PS, if you squint at the new one its a dead ringer for a Focus, thats just another reason why i wont be getting one!!!

Subaru! i thought it where a Mazda 3 hatchback! Subaru need to hang their designers! The new Impreza has just ruined everything that makes it a beast! I love Subaru Impreza’s especially the classic shape but now EVO’S are blowing them away on appearance!

men i was so furious when a i saw it, i love the last sti and it was so amazing, but the new is a like a fancy car not what an impreza resemblances

The Impreza has been slowly ruined since they changed the look from the 22B and the RB5 editions. Why change what isn’t busted my grandad always said. How true is that in this situation. I am gutted that a Rallying Icon has been ruined.

Subaru!!!Subaru!!!Subaru!!!……You have ruined my DREAM…..I own a 2006 WRX STI which needs replacement and there is no way I am gonna buy into your damb looking 2008 version. NO NO NO…I would rather not sell my old WRX. I am a WRX STI fanatic and can not drive any other model….even Evo x… I will wait until the STI designers are all sacked and hope that the new ones will bring the old legend back in 2009 or 2010.
