Order books don’t open until 4 December 2007, but Fiat’s sales team have been busy: a company insider has revealed over 1000 UK customers have put down deposits on the funky new 500.

The UK will get 15,000 Fiat 500s in 2008. A company spokesperson commented on the buzz surrounding the new model: “The number of deposits already laid down suggests there is a keen interest.”

Its Car of the Year victory was complete – it fought off strong competition from the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Mercedes C-Class and Mazda 2, scoring top marks among many of the 58 jurors.

On its press launch, motoring journalists were so swayed by the cutesy supermini, many put down deposits on the spot for themselves.

And you can see why – its cool, retro looks and funky interior inspire the funkiest recesses of Italian chic – or do they?

Can the iconic looks and style of the new Fiat 500 kickstart a lasting legacy, or will it be a throwaway one-minute wonder?

What do you think about the 500 – are you tempted? With prices starting at just £8,000, has Fiat scored the hit of the year?
