I swapped by 1.6 Focus, 51 plate, for a smaller 1.6 Getz, this was back in Jan this year, now find out that the larger Focus will be a lot cheaper than mu ‘little’ Getz which will be £210.
Think Mr Brown will be losing a lot of votes in 2009 when the election is here!

Agree with that, but the railways as far as I know DO NOT get a discount on Diesel, or obtaining Electric Power from the Grid, they pay the full commercial rate, unlike Airlines who do not pay the full price!

Its a disgrace the car tax system. What about the people that need a 4×4 for there work or to just leave the house in winter time. I use a 4×4 but its for that purpose, it goes of road because it needs too, but the goverment decide to put up the tax because its a gas guzzeler. WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH. The system is all wrong. If anything stop the expenses for all the pollititions that claim for everything, Probably road tax charges, Why should we pay for there second homes or there posh meal at a hotel. Its a bloody shamble and the goverment is got it all wrong again. Nothing new there then. Its all right for them, bet they don’t pay for there road tax. Its time the goverment stop riping the people of britian of and sorted this mess out, maybe start by reviewing there WAGES + EXPENSES.

I feel sorry for all the people that have cars registered before apr 06 and after mar 01 with slightly high emmisions * OR ABOUT TO BUY*
I had to ring dvla and even they said its complicated and cars will have there bands changed over next year!?! What? you might say??? Does anyone know about this? nothing been mentioned in press etc Even Guy at dvla had to check! makes it complicated. I’ve just sold a laguna 2.0 pet turbo Emmisions = 203 g/km making it tax band F NOW, (over 185) £210. Next year it will be classed as tax band K 201 -225 just 2 g/km over so £300 ! £90 more!!! then in 2010 £340 Have I lost anyone? any comments please? And No before you ask, I didn’t tell him, DYOR and he didn’t ask

Well this country really is going to the Dogs, Cannot labour see what they are doing we are having to pay for there financial cockups. All they are going to do is create more unemployment less people will buy new cars as the running costs are going to be too great so the 2nd hand car market will do better as people will look to buy pre 2001 models, this will cause job losses on the car sales forcourts of new cars as companys look to make cuts, so well done labour you have sent this country into the dark ages, it`s about time you woke up and looked at the mess you are making.

Try listening to the people for a change and not your accountants saying we need another way to cost our uk tax payers more money.

Wake up labour all i can say is good luck at the next election as you certainly wont be running this country as the population of the uk will vote you out so fast your feet wont touch the ground on the way of of number 10.

THE POINT MOST OF YOU ARE MISSING IS THAT IT IS BACK DATED TO CARS REGISTERED FROM MARCH 2001, SO WE ARE BEING PUNISHED NOW FOR BUYING THE WRONG CAR UPTO 7 YEARS AGO. IT SHOULD BE A FUTURES TAX TO MAKE OUR FUTURE PURCHASES GREENER. ALL THIS DOES IS MAKE OUR OLDER CARS WORTHLESS, FOR INSTANCE A 2001/2002 BMW 325 OR AUDI A4 2.4 WHICH ARE EFFICIENT NORMAL FAMILY CARS BOUGHT BY PEOPLE ON LOWER TO MIDDLE INCOMES WHO WANTED A QUALITY CAR INSTEAD OF A FIESTA /CORSA ARE NOW BEING HAMERED BECAUSE OF THAT DECISION – THEY PAY A HUGE INCREASE OF ROAD TAX OR TRADE IN FOR A GREENER CAR BUT IN DOING SO LOOSE A FORTUNE ON THE VALUE OF THEIR CURRENT ASSET. The thing i don’t get is, i drive a 1999 Honda Accord Type R, because it’s a pre 2001 car, i will be paying around £210 for 12 months tax. The same car, but from 2001 onwards (same engine, same emmissions etc.) will be paying the higher £400 tax band.

It’s total madness, something needs to be done and quick!

The UK government couldn’t run a nursery nevermind the country.

The new proposed road tax prices based on CO2 emissions are a joke.

A car with 100 CO2 emmissions is tax exempt yet might do several thousands of miles more than a car lets say at 200 CO2 which is more damaging to the environment?

Whats the solution everyone asks?

Simple answer make MOTs compulsory every year even on new vehicles and base road tax on the miles each vehicle does during the year.

Then people who use their vehicles less pay less.

OK time to side with the government I know you want to charge us taxes to pay for NHS etc etc but there’s a simple answer to that by making a new law.

If your birth certificate does not say born in Britain then you get nothing, no NHS no dole tax credits or anything else we waste billions of pounds on.

When I go abroad on holiday I have to take out medical insurance etc so why the hell shouldn’t people not born in my native country do the same?

British TAX should be spent on BRITISH citizens not immigrants.

Bring in the identity cards like they have in the USA and make it compulsory to carry them, then we would know who should be entitled to anything if anything.

Thanks Labour this means everyone with a car that falls into a higher bracket for car tax will lose hundreds if not thousands of pounds on their cars, even if they are not ‘Chelsea Tractors’! The rich will still buy whatever they want, while the poorer people will have to make do with cars they can afford to run………. I know this blog is about the car tax and budget, so I won’t get started on Labour and other areas, but they wont last long now I feel! I have a great idea Labour which is just as ludicrous, if you get caught speeding in a more expensive car……. fine them more?!?!?! Another way to tax us! Should I sit on my **** all day claiming dole, in my free council house, counting my job finders allowance/family benefit and get everything for free or continue to work hard for a living and get screwed by the government??? (sorry I did get started on other things!)

Well what are we going to do? As normal we will all moan & groan but in the end pay the damn road tax. I have an old 2001 Shogun Pinin 1.8ltre petrol engine & just been told its worthless, its all i can afford, tried trading it in but no-one wants it!
I cant wait for a general election to kick this shower out, all they do is kick the poor and make the rich richer, I would love to emergrate but havent the guts!!

I sit, read and write with despair. This robbery will happen. The tories will win the next election. They will invent new taxes (on top of this one) to deliver something else that won’t work in the long run. They will be allowed to try, then removed and replaced with another party that will do exactly the same. This is not an issue based problem, it’s a political one. I have no confidence in Westminster full stop. Benefit fraudsters – a massive issue. Fathers for justice – a significant issue. Things that matter are never adequately addressed. Take a peek at repossession numbers currently. I finish where I started – I despair. What can we do?

I was interested to read the comment left by our European friend Hans.

I work within a privately owed company at middle management level, work an average sixty hour week and pay all the tax demanded by our government. In response aside from Child Benefit my wife and I receive no other benefits from the state.

I work within the Road Haulage industry an industry that of late has been taxed to almost death by the government, thanks to EU law our European counterparts receive lower taxes, cheaper products and a competitive edge that I and my fellow countrymen could only dream of.

My response to Hans is this; I am a married father of four with two large dogs (admittedly all my choice), I cycle or motorbike to and from work depending on the weather, my company car normally sits on the drive as I can not afford to fuel it. My wife drives a large eight seater People Carrier, needed as when she travels just with the children we need five seats, six with me, seven or eight if friends join the party. Why should I be made to pay more for my vehicle, one that produces 225g/km?

Would it be better for the environment that I purchase two or three smaller vehicles and travel in convey instead?

Its a big shame that our government didn’t have the balls to bring up the tax even more for cars that are over 200g c02. And reward the people that actually make a choice of driving a somewhat environmental friendlier vehicle than many others.

The only way to get people to understand is when it affects our wallets.

Come on Britain, show Europe that we can be a bit forward thinking and not the old closed minded country that the rest of the Europe think we already are.

Another dishonest way to rob the law abiding poor and middle income of this nation by the duplicitous and callous cheats who claim to represent our interests (whatever it costs us).
I drive a 14 year old diesel Toyota that still returns good mpg and will readily burn veg oil bio mix, so leaving a minimal carbon footprint. The carbon used in its construction is already accounted for and maintaining it in a roadworthy state leaves little extra impact on the environment – a fraction of that of building and shipping even the most ‘efficient’ super green mini’s (do the sums and you will see it will take decades to balance this equation).
If the motive for penalising us was truly green then all new vehicle production should be discouraged. Recycling and improving the efficiency of the many clean vehicles already on the roads would be far more effective – not in the interests of the minister’s paymasters and lobbyists pockets though, I suspect.
Unlike the greedy MP’s I cannot afford to buy a new supposedly greener car and even were this possible it would not meet my needs-I use my vehicle as a commuting means (when not on bike, bus or train), family bus, holiday venue (it doubles up as a basic sleeper) and for ferrying a myriad of large items. Basically my choice is based on good ecologically sound principles with a bit of free choice thrown in.
The only consolation is that Brown and his cronies will not be in power when the rules kick in
