You sound like the kind of nutjob who sits in the middle lane at 55~60 causing people to slow down and wait for a space to accelerate past you; not very fuel efficient.

Driving a fuel efficient car does not constitute being fuel efficient, driving intelligently makes just as much difference if not more.

As we're all being encouraged to scrap our old bangers, coughing up all this CO2 and crap (not to mention all the benzene and other toxic substances now in petrol to make up the octane lost when leaded was phased out), consider for a moment what is going to happen to your scrap. It's being boxed up and sent to China so they can make coal and oil fired power stations.

Who's ignorant now?

PS. Wobbletastic: Catalytic converters continue to have a restrictive effect on exhaust gases when they are up to temperature.

Climate change is a fact. Comparing temperatures in warming periods in the past with now, is an old chestnut of incorrect comparison.

This planet spins in Space and sometimes we are near the Sun (warming age), sometimes we are further away (ice age). Of course cars didn't contribute to previous warming ages, but they DO contribute now. So anything that helps reduce that contribution is a good thing and should be encouraged, not mocked.

Those who write "I like my performance, and should be allowed to choose" should realise that an individuals actions can affect us all. If I choose to go out and drop bricks off a motorway bridge just because I personally might get a buzz from seeing cars swerve beneath me, should I be allowed to do that regardless of the consequences to others?

Freedom of choice brings a need to choose responsibly - sometimes the choice is "No - I can't/won't do that because, even though I might like it, overall that choice may bring harm".

So would I buy a "green version"? I am seriously considering it, and the answer will probably be yes - not because of any marketing hype, but just because I choose to do less harm that I am doing now, because that is the better option in the long run.

What is wrong with these people? Climate change is pretty much a fact and will have deverstating consequences. Car use is a significant contributer to climate change and we all need to do all we can to avert complete disaster. Yet I am reading in the other adverts about "why should I.." etc and even a reason given that you should not buy one because of the marketing? Well all cars are marketed, so there is not much to argue there. A few people buying more fuel effecient cars is not going to make much difference. But it will create a demand for what is currently a niche market and encourage car manufacturors to make more fuel efficient cars. Interestingly if you look at performance cars they seem to fall into two categories, one with a big engine to make it go fast and bad MPGs, others which are light and fuel efficient and get some of the best MPGs. So I don't think performance is an argument for anything except the most fuel efficient cars.

I would like to see a slow lane limited to 60MPH on all motorways and all cars with below a certain efficiency should be forced to use it.

I have a Polo Bluemotion and I am really pleased with it. I pay no road tax, and even with higher diesel prices I am saving on fuel costs compared to the petrol Polo I had before. I do mostly motorway driving, so the Bluemotion works out perfectly for me (I consistently get ~75mpg on my work journeys). Even just driving around town at the weekend and I'm well into the 60mpgs. For people like me, who are not interested in "performance" cars, who just need a good reliable car to get from A to B, and who rarely have passengers in the back (admittedly there is not a huge amount of room in the back but it is nowhere near as bad as the Mini), this car is fantastic.

Yes, but not to save our planet, but just to cut fuel bills. Overhere (NL) you get a 600 euro discount on the ridiculous 45,2 percent tax (besides the 19% VAT) + 328 euro (because it's a diesel) on cars for the VW Polo Blue Motion. After paying the road tax (880 euro/year) i want to use the least amount of diesel possible, because filling up means paying even more taxes.

i would never purchase a green car not even in colour ,just because some people dont like performance doesnt mean everyone else cant have it.

i drive a mitsubishi lancer evo every single day and it puts a smile on my face every single time and same for my wife, we dont drink smoke or take drugs we just enjoy our car.

so why do we have to be punished for this ??? higher insurance ,higher tax ,higher fuel costs because it only uses optimax from shell ??? crazy if you ask me considering the amount of crime on the streets that goes by with a slap on the rists

In a word no!!! But if a manufacturer came up with a so-called "green" car that produced the same type of performance as petrol or diesel equivalents then I would consider it but only to get out of paying ridiculous road tax and fuel duty costs. I certainly wouldn't use my hard earned money to buy what's on offer for now. Still, no matter what type of fuel we are using in the future the governments will still ensure they take their ludicrous cut in tax!! And on the subject of climate change what caused the ice age to end? Warming of the earth perhaps? How many cars were there then?? And, why is it the UK motorist is hit the hardest every budget?? Am I right in saying that the UK contributes a mere 10% (or thereabouts) to the world's carbon emmissions? It's time the car owner was given a break!

Please don't buy a 'green car' thinking that you will be saving the world, because you wont be. Only buy a car you actually like. Manufacturers don't make these cars because they have any intention of changing the natural world for the better. They simply produce so-called environmental cars to fill a market niche created by the current eco-panic that seems to be sweeping the west at the moment. Simply don't be fooled into thinking you have a duty to buy a companies product just because it is marketed as being kind to the environment, the marketing chaps will say whatever they want to increase their profit margin; by buying a 'green car' you are falling into their trap. While I’m on the subject of the environment I would just like to point out that a majority of journeys would be less wasteful of the worlds resources if catalytic converters were not fitted to cars exhausts… catalysers need to reach a working temperature to be of any use, which typically takes about 15 minutes by which time a lot of journeys are over. For the whole of that time the engine will have been working harder and using more fuel to push the exhaust gasses through the unneeded catalyser than it would have done without it.

I can not understand why cars are built to reach speeds which are not even legal on the roads in this country. seems like a cmplete waste of time and money to me. I would hate to have to drive some annoying little hatchback or twitmobile like the Prius. If a Prius crashes what happens to all the environmental acid anyway? Also if someone wanted to save the environment (not that it needs saving) they would be better off getting a second hand car thus 'saving the world' by not wasting energy making a new one. All these people in these pathetic hybrid cars would be doing more for the natural world if they had gone out and bought a Impreza P1 instead.
