“Tasteless” Citroen ad angers MPs

Politicians are in uproar over Citroen’s advertising campaign for its new C5 – labelling it “tasteless.”

Westminster Scottish National Party leader Angus Robertson wants the advert banned – and is supported by a number of senior MPs.

Mr Robertson said: “This ad campaign is supposed to be tongue in cheek. However it features Nazi stereotypes and symbolism which is inappropriate and tasteless.

“While I defend the use of stereotypes and pointed humour in advertising, Citroen has been misguided and crossed the boundaries of taste and shown a lack of responsibility.”

Mr Robertson noted the C5 advert opens “with airborne shots set to Wagner, reminiscent of the controversial Nazi propaganda film ‘Triumph of the Will.’

“It goes on to feature an eagle statue similar to the Nazi emblem, a road sign in gothic script not seen in Germany since 1945, a fencing duel popular with extreme-right German fraternities and ends in front of the 1936 Berlin Olympic Stadium.”

What do you think of the advert?

Its ridiculous to think that politicians are spending our time and money complaining about trivial issues like this instead of things that really matter. My boyfriend is half-german, and it doesn’t bother him, so why should our government waste time bothering about it like this? Idiotic…

Sad to see that Mr Robertson is worried about things like this….

  3. Has this man got nothing better to do with his time. What a joke.

I am concerned only because Mr Robertson seems to have nothing better to do with his time – time paid for by us – than to try to prove he has no sense of humour. “Dour” springs to mind

Haha I think it’s funny… it’s simply a Citroen advert set in the fatherland highlighting the C5′s German sensibilities. It’s about time we were allowed to poke fun at ze Germans without being accused of racism. I suppose they could have had open-top C5′s in convoy and some nazi salutes but they fell short of that this time!!

    what a great advert!
Stereotypes is what advertising is all about – when will politicians understand that?

Its like the current Renault ad where all the parts are thrown together to make a car – its the normal French way of doing stuff!
Then there is the Fiat ad where the car falls apart as the fella gets into it – another stereotype of Italian cars.

but mention Germany and the stereotype that makes you think of …!

1st time I saw this ad I had to do a double take because of the nazi standards in the ad and other references. I’m sure the Germans wouldn’t find this tongue in cheek.

But since when have the car adverts nowadays been anything about the cars.

Nissan’s xtrail ad with futureistic robots guiding its way… could you actually sue them for misrepresenting its abilities :) . Sure if it came with those robots it would be a bargin. The skating cars which transform into robots too or even cars made out of cake like the skoda ad… whatever will those crazy fellas think of next.
