By building the Audi Q5, the German carmaker has not only launched a new car but also entered into a new class – the small and sporty SUV.
The Audi Q5’s main competitors will be the BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander, at least until the sleek BMW X6 arrives next year.
Would you consider the £30,000 Audi Q5 when it goes on sale at the end of the year? Do you think the ‘niche’ car classes are a good idea?

In my opinion, you’ve presented the topic in a quite thorough yet concise manner, that is genuinely useful when someone wants to get the facts without spending too a lot time searching the Internet and sifting out the noise to discover the answers to their questions. I usually get so frustrated with so numerous in the final results inside the major SE’s due to the fact they normally seem to mostly be filled with filler content that often isn’t extremely sensible. Looked at both cars and quite a few others as well & it came down to a straight choice between 2. X6 35d or RRSportV8d. The Q5 is a good looking, quality brand with a lot of sensible options. but it was fresh on the blocks & Audi were very reluctant as you can expect to give any sign of a discount. Q7 is just a whale. Let the Arabs have the Jap contenders & overall the choice is pretty limited for a good premium 4×4 car. Even Land Rover were acting daft with their discounts where as BMW overall were more than happy to talk business. In the end I got a 20% discount on a X6 ordered from the factory to my spec & that placed it below, price wise to a similar spec Q5. No contest!
I have recently test driven the X6 and it’s quite simply an amazing drive. I currently have a 5 series tourer and its better, much much better. For practical reasons I’ve have always gone for either an estate or 4×4 (I do actually live in the country), never desired a sportscar or felt the need to drive at the limits of self control / recklessness and have accepted that my practical needs could not be combined with a little self indulgence when it comes to performance and handling. Well times have changed and I can now have it all. One week to go before the future arrives! Regards Tim (Not so dim as to make a comment about a car I’ve never driven)
In your review of the X6 you forgot to give a rating for the level of stupidity of the driver of such a unecessary and ugly behemoth.
In my opion the driver stupidity rating is a resounding 10/10.
BMW will always be BMW. Performance, handling, look. Audi always is far behind with copying BMW i.e idrive, headlights. For me Audi is not in the same league as BMW and Merc. RWD first, then all FWD cars…
While I think the Q5 is a nice looking car I don’t think it breaks any boundries or pushes the envolope of car design. Its simply evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
As for the X6 however, BMW has to be congratulated for having the forsight in producing something that is both groundbreaking and striking to look at. It pushes the boundries of car design which must be a good thing?
Love it or hate it, I reckon it will grow on you. I’d personally take one over a Q5 any day of the week!
i think this car is better than the new bmw x6 by far.
I think Audi should have stuck with the Q7 and maybe taken it into some sort of mid cycle enhancement as opposed to producing this mini 4×4 just for the sake of taking on some niche segment, its a risk and may not take with buyers.
A peek at the X6 tells me that BMW know what they’re getting into in terms of design and styling. Q5 looks merely like a lazy take on Q7.
