I think all the models of VW looks the same, especially the front.
Sure, it dosn’t look bad but it could be more different.

The Golf is such a safe bet – reasonably handsome, good residuals, average reliability, reasonable spec. But it’s hardly the sort of thing to set pulses racing. On the plus side, the new range of twin-charger TSI engines are pretty darned good!

Cannot agree with Rob – VW does have a very good image and a lot of the contract hire companies do indeed place high residual values on their cars. It has to be said that the used car market backs this up with high used car values. Personally I have had a few Golf’s and have enjoyed each and every one of them. Working for a leasing company – http://www.contracthireconsultancy.co.uk – we do sell a lot of VW product, especially the Golf. I say long live the VW Golf.

Working for a car contract hire company – http://www.contracthireconsultancy.co.uk , we have been “in love” with the VW Golf for many years. It has always been a great car but it did to be fair have a bit of a blip a few years ago. I do believe however that this car will take it back to the top. Whatever happens we will sell a lot of them due to the respect that VW demands and the consequent residual values.

Looks like a less mean-looking MK5 with an uglier back end, although I always tend to lean towards previous models when they launch a new one, until I come around to the idea, lol!

Really do prefer the Scirroco though any day…

Having had two mk4 golfs in the past, one being a 2.0 gti colour concept and the other an R32. (Then I moved to bmw for a while, 3 series sport convertible). I always kept an eye on the golf because my dad and I were big fans (my dad got me into volkswagen). I am now back to hot hatches and I bought a Seat Leon Cupra. Could have had the golf obviously (R32) but for some reason after the mk4 the Golf lost my interest somewhat. It’s ugly now. Sure it still has the “classic golf silhouette” to quote volkswagen, but in the light it’s just plain ugly. A bastardised version of a once great design. I read in a car magazine once about how amazing it would be if volkswagen started a nostalgia devision, making models from the past. And I cant help but think, that sure would be popular. I would buy a new MK4 R32 in a heart beat!!!!

the cost is lower because the development costs are lower, hence no (significant) capital expenditure to develop the prototype, to change the assembly lines, to design / develop / test the components, etc. The lower price is a logical consequence of smart strategy in economy of scale…for a very successful product. don’t try to find flaws, there won’t be any.

I have just driven a MK6 Golf nearly 1000 miles in the past few days around Europe on a business trip – having already got a MK5 Golf I was looking forward to comparing – it’s still great fun to drive but it does not feel as safe as my MK5 – it is definitely now a thinner car as I can now reech the pasenger door without any difficulty whereas in my MK5 car I cannot – I do not like the dash board layout either and finally from the outside it looks like any other car of the same size – my wife actually said — yuck it’s like a fiesta!!!!

Now that Porche vertually own Volkswagen they know full well that the Golf is to Volkswagen what the 911 is to Porche, a brand product that nobody in the motor industry would dare to radically change.

The new Mk6 Golf still looks like a Golf even though it looks more modern with its angular lines.

As to build quality, Porche know a few things about how to build quality cars and i am sure the new Golf will be just as over engineered as its older brothers.

Just the other day i was admiring a 1994 Golf CL in red with no visible signs of rust and looking like a car half its age.

Golfs are iconic vehicles built to last and long may it remain so in the new Mk 6.
