Nissan GT-R
Nissan GT-R, BMW X6, Skoda Superb… the editorial team had some varied suggestions for the title of Best Car of 2008.
Read their suggestions below and nominate your favourite cars of 2008.

“It has to be the Nissan GT-R, even though it doesn’t go on until next year. How can a car maker which builds cheap, real world cars like the Micra and Note go and build a car which will beat just about any other supercar EVER. And there’s room for four. And there’s a massive boot. And it’s a similar price to an M3. And I could go on.”
Stuart Milne, Deputy Web Editor
“Ford Fiesta – it does everything that could be expected of a car costing from £8,700. But it also does most of it better than cars costing twice the price. Its great fun to drive, looks great, is well built and affordable. In fact, the biggest issue it raises is whether you really need the larger Focus.”
Vijay Pattni, Junior Writer
“Who can ignore the bonkers BMW X6? An SUV which has taken more spinach than Popeye, the X6 mixes dramatic coupe styling with a four-wheel-drive body. Think mini monster-truck and you’re halfway there. Add BMW’s fabulous 3-litre twin-turbo diesel, award-winning 3-litre twin-turbo petrol (or even the brain-busting V8 petrol) for added histrionics, and you have a completely pointless car. But a magnificent one.”
Dominic Sacco, Junior Writer
“For me the 2008 car of the year is the Mazda RX-8 R3. It’s an affordable four-seater sports car which makes it fun and practical at the same time. It looks stylish enough without going overboard, and the 230bhp rotary engine has enough power to keep the fussiest of petrolheads happy.”
Keith Collantine, Assistant Editor (Trade)
Audi’s flabbergasting RS6 Avant – Gallardo performance in an estate – was top of my list for a while. But at the last minute I thought it was too obvious a choice and opted for the Skoda Superb instead.
It may be lumbered with a strange name and quirky styling, but in the Superb you get a comfortable, well-equipped and extremely spacious car for very modest money indeed. I’d call it the ‘thinking man’s saloon’, but that would be too obvious as well.
Andy Goodwin, Junior Writer
“My favourite car of 2008 is undoubtedly the Nissan GT-R because it re-wrote the supercar rule books and was the star of countless videos, articles and debates which helped make 2008 petrolhead heaven. “

Mine would be the BMW 520d, simply because it ticks all the boxes for me and I don’t live in fantasy land.
