Another new Bugatti Veyron edition has been spotted – a very shiny model modified by Mansory that’s on sale in the United Arab Emirates.
The Veyron’s awesome capabilities are well-known: its W16 engine pumps out more than 1,000bhp, propelling the car beyond 250mph. The SSC Ultimate Aero may have stolen its crown as world’s fastest production car, but the Veyron combines its outrageous performance with an elegance that other supercars cannot muster.
But does that make it cool? Not for me – I reckon the McLaren F1 is still the all-time coolest supercar. Here’s why.
I measure how cool a supercar is by whether it can walk the walk. And Bugatti has been coy about putting the Veyron up against its rivals in wheel-to-wheel competition.
It never formally held the ‘world’s fastest production car’ title. And Bugatti shies away from motor racing – you won’t find a Veyron on the sports car scene, and it took Top Gear years to get one for a power lap of their track.
The McLaren F1, on the other hand, was built by a Formula 1 team and won the Le Mans 24 Hours. It reaches its 17th birthday this year, yet it’s still the dream car of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. McLaren boss Ron Dennis told him he can have one – if he wins another two titles.
The F1 is an uncompromising driver’s machine. No one else has dared to copy its central driving position, mimicking the single seater racers McLaren has dominated world championships with. The seats are custom-built for each driver.
It may ‘only’ produce 627bhp, but at 1,140kg it weighs 740kg less than a Veyron. To put that into perspective, a series 1 Lotus Elise weights 725kg…
Dozens have tried to copy the F1′s style, but none of the imitators have captured the F1′s classic, purposeful cool. The Veyron looks almost bloated by comparison.
In 17 years I don’t think any supercar builder has come close to producing a car that surpasses the F1. But McLaren is working on its successor now, so watch this space…
Which do you think is the coolest supercar?

f1 is cool but the buggati is cooler,BUT did anyone see the carbonfibre pagani zonda monster the veyron round the top gear track.sure the bugatti won a drag race with the zonda, but the zonda was 2secs a lap faster(what a car) the zonda makes me feel like a 10 yr old, and thats what hypercars are built for,as for bikes clarkson put this to bed years ago with the r1 v 911 cs2, the bike roars away till the 1st corner where the 911 passes it that fast the guy nearly came off, 911 wasted the r1(fastest prod bike at the time) while the 911 was the base model, all you bikers look it up(wish i could see your faces when u do)
