Should the national speed limit be cut to 50mph?

The national speed limit in Britain is to be cut from 60mph to 50mph according to plans revealed by roads minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

Is this a step in the right direction or another unnecessary restriction on our driving freedom?

The government says the speed limit cut is designed to save lives. In 2007 there were 2,947 fatalities on UK roads and it expects that figure to fall by around 250 because of the reduced limit.

To put this into perspective, 114,000 Britons are killed by smoking every year.

Ministers say single lane carriageways are a particular problem, and many accidents are caused by people speeding on them or overtaking dangerously.

Everyone wants Britain’s roads to be as safe as possible, but is a speed limit cut really the best way of achieving this? According to the government’s figures speed was only a factor in 29% of those 3,000 deaths.

So what is the real cause of fatal road accidents? I suspect the answer is simply ‘bad driving’.

Unlike speeding, this is not something that can be fixed by putting up more speed cameras – which bring in money. We need more traffic officers on the road – and that costs money.
