Volvo is introducing a new safety system which automatically brakes when a pedestrian walks out in front of the car.
Known as ‘Pedestrian Protection’, the new technology will feature in the Volvo S60 when it goes on sale next year.
It works by using a small camera and radar to detect a human-shaped object, then sets off a warning sound and flashing light. If these are ignored, the brakes are fully applied and the vehicle will stop if driving at less than 15mph.
If the car is travelling faster, Volvo says the collision force will be reduced by around 75 per cent.
Do you think automatic brakes are a good idea? Will the technology make drivers lazy?

This is gonna drive me nuts, some peds love to walk in front of you and give you the “and what?” look.
Please can you revise the spelling of padestrians to read pedestrians?
I apologise for my poor spelling, I blame it on the wine I was drinking (not while driving, obviously officer!).
Bad idea, I’ve yet to hear how many padestrians get ran over when not on a crossing that they have the right of way.
No doubt it’s the majority, if someone gets ran over when on the road & not at a crossing it’s their own fault.
How many anti-social little ***** will now walk out in front of volvo’s to make the system kick-in?
…this car will remain stationary forever on a road in any big town.
personally I simply refuse to buy a vehicle with this kind of device installed onboard.
