Jenson Button: Could he be champ by next week?
This weekend could be the weekend Jenson Button is finally crowned F1 world champion.
He’s one of only three drivers that are able to take the title, but the Brit charger is 15 points ahead of second placed teammate Rubens Barrichello and 20 ahead of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
Button got off to a storming start in 2009, winning an incredible six of the first seven races. But its fellow BrawnGP driver, Barichello, who’s found form winning two of the last four races.
It’d be crazy to dismiss Vettel as it’s a string of bad luck, including three retirements that’s forced him back to third.
So how can Button win the championship in Japan? There are four scenarios, all involving Barichello:
- Button wins and Barrichello finishes lower than third
- Button finishes second, and Barichello is lower than fifth
- Button is third and Barichello is lower than seventh
- Button is fourth and Barichello is lower than eighth
If he doesn’t manage it, the fight will go on to Brazil on October 18 – where Hamilton became champion on the last corner in 2008 – or the inaugural Abu Dhabi grand prix on November 1.
