Skoda Superb Estate

Skoda Superb Estate

Last week I had the pleasure of test driving the new Skoda Superb Estate. ‘Pleasure’ is the right word, because as well as being sumptuously well-equipped it was a pretty good steer too given its size.

Hats off to Skoda for choosing the word ‘estate’ to describe the car, and not one of the euphemisms preferred by their rivals – Sportback, Sports Tourer or some other such nonsense.

But whichever word you use to describe them, it seems estate are back in fashion.

Estates had fallen out of favour a few years ago as the rise of the MPV cut their share of the family car market. But big-booted cars seem to be winning drivers over once again.

The Superb I drove last week is positively gargantuan. Rear passengers have loads of room to stretch out – I could quite happily have spent a long journey sat in the back.

It’s easy to get distracted by that impressive headline figure of 1,865 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded down. Realistically, you’ll rarely need to fold them flat as your can carry four passengers plus 633 litres of kit.

There are reasons why some buyers will continue to favour MPVs – the high driving position, for example. But for people want something a bit sporty there are plenty of estates that combine an entertaining driving experience with big fmaily car practicality.

Which do you prefer?
