BMW 5 Series GT: Another new niche

BMW 5 Series GT

BMW 5 Series GT

What to make of the BMW 5 Series GT? The latest big car in BMW’s range is pitched somewhere between the 5 Series and X5, yet is based on the 7 Series.

Would you buy one – or is this just another sub-niche too far?

The 5 Series GT is best thought of as a car for people who want the practicality of an SUV but don’t want the stigma of owning a ‘gas-guzzler’.

That term certainly doesn’t apply to the 5 Series GT – at least not in its 530d guise, where it manages more than 40 miles to the gallon and 173g/km of CO2. Both impressive stats for a fairly large car.

As we say in our review it drives well, it’s comfortable and there’s loads of space inside. But many will find its looks a bit of a challenge, and I can’t help but think it’s still too much of a ‘big car’ to win over SUV-haters.

What do you think of the 5 Series GT?

Personally, i reckon BMW execs just love the badge snobbery that exists. They can churn out the uglist cars (that are very bland to drive – despite what any ‘paid of’ journo says) and people still rush to buy them. (just to be better than the neighbours – but they’ll say it for the driving experience!)

I drive an M3, so im not a BMW hater – just that pretty much all their recent models are brutal to look at and all the models are very over-rated.

It’s an unappealing looking car. Unfortunately there isn’t a single motoring journalist in UK that has the guts to call a BMW bad. It seems that they are almost afraid too. They have a few good engines that they use across their range and by virtue of that all their models are called excellent. I don’t see why we suck up to the Germans.

I reviewed the last two BMWs we had on the site – the X1 and 5 Series GT – and to be honest they’re both good cars. I think the worst thing you can say about them (which I mentioned in both reviews) is the iffy styling. But design’s a personal thing – whenever we get pictures of a new car in the first thing we start arguing about in the office are its looks.

As it happens we’ve just had another BMW in for review – the M3 Edition.

What else don’t you like about them? Or is it just the looks?

Absolutelly ugly pointless car in the same category with Merc R class, Bmw x1 and x3 all for crazy people with more money than sense.
