I’ve been a big fan of the new Polo ever since I tested it at its international launch.
It proved itself as a worthy alternative to the brilliant Ford Fiesta, even excelling it in certain respects.
The interior feels more expensive than the Fiesta’s, but it’s less funky.
Drive down a twisting lane and you’ll find the Fiesta’s handling is more driver-orientated, but the Polo is far from embarrassed
The Polo is a more grown-up car than the Fiesta, but that’s not to say it won’t appeal to young drivers as well.
If I were looking to put my own money into a supermini at the moment it would be a tough choice – especially as the Polo is now more competitively priced than ever before.
Driving the Polo in the UK this week it had lost none of the sparkle I experienced on foreign soil.
In the worst weather of the year it felt sure footed and secure, and that great interior and a decent stereo makes the dreary winter commute more cheery.
But is it better than a Fiesta? In the end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a quick straw poll of the office sees the Polo just edging ahead, on image alone.
