What do you think of “cosmetic” special editions?

The Renault Twingo Gordini Renaultsport

Renault has revealed a new Twingo special edition – the Twingo Gordini Renaultsport.

Despite a new leather interior, colour scheme and a host of extras such as climate control and automatic headlights, it doesn’t get a power boost.

Superminis usually get the cosmetic special edition treatment, and we’ve seen the Mazda 2 Tamura, Citroen C4 “by Loeb” and Ford Fiesta Titanium Individual get minor styling upgrades in the past year.

Others include the BMW M3 Edition with 10mm lower ride height, a new colour scheme and interior.

Sure, they all look great. But for the extra money I’d rather have an engine remap, induction kit and other tuning upgrades to get more power beneath the bonnet.

One advantage of special editions however is the depreciation factor – they may hold their value more than standard models, especially if they’re in a limited production run.

Are badges and extras enough to sway buyers? Or do you think special editions should always include a power upgrade?
