VW's Touareg rally raid racer
The Dakar rally kicks off on January 2 strikes us as the kind of race you’d be mad to compete in.
Yet every year, hundreds of racers will blast thousands of miles through some of the roughest terrain the world has to offer.
Like this year’s race, the 2010 will be Dakar in name only, as political instability forced it to South America, where the rally raiders will race almost 3,000 miles through Argentina and Chile.
Volkswagen has just released pictures of its Touareg race car which looks like it’ll be a formidable weapon, particularly in the hands of ex-WRC ace Carlos Sainz.
But while I doff my cap to Carlos, its the bikes I have the real respect for. They’ll give no quarter for nearly 3,000 miles. Racers die on this event, and for that Sainz should be thankful for a tough car to keep the elements out, and him inside.
