Herbie, Doris, Eleanor, even “Kate’s dirty sister”… no they’re not names of local councillors, but famous cars.
To some, naming a car comes as standard. Others just find it downright weird. What do you think?
“It’s just a scratch Eleanor, it can be fixed.”
The quote Nicholas Cage used in the film Gone in 60 Seconds after knocking his stolen 1973 Ford Mustang GT500 nicknamed ‘Eleanor’ was as bizarre as it was comedic.
Naming cars is one thing, but talking to them as well?
I can’t see the point or fascination in it myself, but I’ll admit that on the rare occasion I may have asked my car to work properly when something is at fault.
Certain celebrities have been known to name their cars too. Race driver and model Jodie Kidd learnt to drive in a red mk1 Volkswagen Polo she named Doris, long before she was racing Maseratis.
Even Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel named his F1 car ‘Kate’s dirty sister’, after his previous car – known as ‘Kate’ – had its chassis damaged.
In a BBC interview with David Coulthard, Vettel confessed to always naming his vehicles: “All the cars I’ve had so far have been female.
“You ask a lot from the car, so you respect her and you try to treat her well.”
Has your car got a name?
