The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are very interesting cars, but cool? No. No matter how many celebrities buy them, hybrids are still lacking in wow factor.
Maybe Porsche is the company to change that. I mean, just look at the pictures. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid oozes pure unadulterated aggression.
Its full racing bodykit, aeroplane wing spoiler, lightweight wheels and sponsors livery mark this car out as the real deal.
Designed for long-distance racing at tracks including the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife, its front wheels are powered by electric motors, producing 80bhp each in bursts lasting around eight seconds.
So, as well as the usual 480bhp from its legendary flat-six petrol engine, there’s 160bhp of electric boost available to catapult you out of a corner and making a swift overtake.
There are no batteries to charge, every time you hit the brakes a flywheel generator stores kinetic energy as it rotates at up to 40,000rpm.
When this technology filters down to Porsche’s road cars, it’s safe to say drivers will enjoy extra performance, without the need for a thirstier engine – as seen in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car.
And, they might even be exempt from London’s congestion charge…
